Employee Sign-In to Slack using Google Workspace SSO (Single Sign-On)
Last updated: November 3, 2025
This guide details the process for an employee to sign in to the Slack desktop application using their Google Workspace credentials (work email and password) as the Single Sign-On (SSO) provider on Windows and macOS.
This method uses Google to verify your identity before granting access to Slack.
Prerequisites
The Slack desktop application installed on your Windows or Mac machine.
Your Google Workspace account.
Step-by-Step Sign-In Process (Windows & Mac)
Step 2: Choose Google as the Sign-In Method
Slack will load the login options screen.
Click the option that says Sign In with Google or Continue with Google.
Step 3: Redirect to the Google Sign-In Page
The Slack app will launch your default web browser (Chrome on Windows, Safari on Mac) and direct it to the standard Google sign-in page.
Step 4: Enter Your Google Workspace Credentials
Enter your full Google Workspace work email address (e.g.,
name@yourcompany.com). Click Next.Enter your Google Workspace password. Click Next.
Step 5: (Optional) Complete Two-Step Verification (2SV/MFA)
If your organization requires 2SV on your Google Workspace account, you will be prompted to complete this step (e.g., approving a prompt on your phone, entering a code).
Step 6: Grant Permission and Return to Slack
After successful Google authentication, you may see a screen asking you to grant permission for Slack to access basic profile information (like your email and name) from your Google account. Click Allow or Accept.
The browser will then display a confirmation and will automatically redirect you back to the Slack desktop application.
The desktop app will recognize the authenticated session and your workspace will open.
Binding Your Account (First-Time Users)
If this is your first time signing in with Google SSO, you might receive an email (often called a binding email) from Slack prompting you to connect your existing Slack account (if one was previously created) with your new Google SSO credentials.
If you receive this email, click the Authenticate your account button within the email and follow the steps to ensure your message history is retained and associated with your Google Workspace identity. This step typically occurs before Step 4 above.
